Most shutter hardware sold today is imported copies of hardware first made here in the 1880s — and contemporary construction doesn’t match 19th-century materials or dimensions. Our mid-weight sets are designed to fit and install easily on new construction, in 1/8″ material equal to or heavier than the originals.

All mid-weight pricing is by the “pair” — enough hardware to hang a single shutter: two hinge pieces that mount to the shutter plus two pintle pieces that mount to the building. Hinges are left- or right-hand specific, so order one pair for the left shutter and one for the right.

The patterns
401 Lift-off hinges
Plate steel hinges common from before the Civil War well into the 20th century. A true lift-off mortise hinge: the shutters lift easily from the window for painting and maintenance and close into the window opening. Made of 1/8″ plate, 3″ or 4″ high, 1″ wide where they meet the shutter, with screws included.
401-SS Stainless Bermuda hinges
The same historic profile, made in 304 stainless by a Florida boat-hardware maker specifically to hang “Bermuda” or “Bahamian” shutters that hinge at the top and swing open from the bottom — shade from the sun, and protection when hurricanes approach. We dropped to two holes with long, aggressive 304 stainless fasteners for an easier, stronger install.
405 Parliament hinges
Mortise-type hinges that mount perpendicular to the building and onto the side of the shutter; the shutters close into the window opening. Common from around the Civil War into the 20th century. We came up with five sizes that fit most installations, all in 1/8″ plate with #12 flat-head screws.
408 Philadelphia hinges & pintles
Designed for contemporary installations: the pintle mounts on surfaces as narrow as ¾″, and the set works best hanging shutters “proud” — outside the window opening — anchored to the wood trim. A simple solution when storm or screen inserts fill the window opening. A 5″ lag pintle can be substituted where appropriate.
411 Board & batten hinges & pintles
The first hardware designed to install board and batten shutters easily. If you have a wood frame around your windows, or windows recessed into masonry, it gives an easy, economical and secure installation. Two heavy fastener holes take two aggressive anchors instead of three or four screws — quicker to install and kinder to masonry.
Questions about mid-weight shutter hinges
What does “priced by the pair” mean?
One pair is enough hardware to hang a single shutter: two hinges that mount to the shutter and two pintles that mount to the building. A window with two shutters needs two pairs — one left-hand, one right-hand.
How do I tell left-hand from right-hand hinges?
Stand outside facing the window. Hinges that fasten to the left side of the window are left-hand hinges; those on the right side are right-hand.
Can mid-weight hinges be used for Bermuda shutters?
Yes. Our 401-SS stainless hinge was designed specifically for top-hung Bermuda or Bahamian shutters, and Parliament hinges can also be installed at the top of the window.
